What is your favourite card you’ve designed for Sunshine Llama, and why?
My favourite card I designed is the ‘Birthday Queen’ drag card, as the character is so
sassy and fabulous! Though a lot of my personal work is tailored towards a female
market, I really enjoyed designing a fun and vibrant card range for a LGBTQ+
Can you tell us a little bit more about your design process? What do you enjoy most about the design process?
My design process consists of a lot of mind mapping, sketching, cups of tea, snacks
and normally a breakdown halfway through… but I always get there in the end! If I’m
illustrating a character, I normally start by taking a photo of myself or one of my
friends in elaborate poses that I can sketch from. My favourite part of the process is
coming up with the ideas and letting your mind run wild with the possibilities.
How did you get into illustration/design?
I’ve always been creative and love all things pattern and colour. I studied Graphic
Design at Nottingham Trent University and after I managed to bag myself a job at the
wonderful Nic&Lou studio designing books and book covers! I think it’s just brilliant
that you can turn your hobbies into a career where everyday you get to be creative.
Where do you find inspiration?
I find most of my inspiration on pinterest or through creative instagram accounts.
However I find having some space away from a project sparks a lot of my ideas!
Inspiration is everywhere, sometimes just going for a walk into town and looking at
shop fronts, book covers in book shops and looking for colour palettes within nature
can lead to the light bulb moment I was desperately after whilst sitting at my desk.
Who is your favourite designer/artist/creative person?
My favourite designer is Morag Myerscough. Her work is so energetic and I love how
her work transforms the most mundane places into a wacky spectacle of colour and
pattern. She is just an all round cool lady!
Do you have any top tips for aspiring designers?
Try and use your design for good. I really do believe design has the power to change
the world. Whether it’s an advertisement that encourages people to take action on
climate change or simply bringing a smile to someone’s face through a greeting card
or funky print- ask yourself, how am I using my skills to benefit other people?
Tell us a fun fact about yourself 🙂
When I have a creative block I put on my rainbow hairband in hopes it will
make me a design genius!
