The team at Lucy Maggie Designs are saddened to have had to say goodbye to two of its Kickstart employees, Beth Agar and Olivia Sullivan, at the end of last week, following the end of their six-month placement, but delighted to be able to welcome Ellie Purdy, who has joined the company as an in-house illustrator.

Beth and Olivia joined Lucy Maggie Designs back in June of this year, having applied for the two open positions at the company: ‘Design and Marketing Assistant’ and ‘Illustrator’. The positions, which were funded in part by the UK Government’s ‘Kickstart’ scheme, opened up new opportunities for Lucy Maggie Designs, meaning the company was able to broaden its offering to its customers in terms of the designs and products offered. In return, the business was able to provide invaluable training, support and advice to the two ambitious employees as they developed skills in their respective fields.

Ellie recently joined the Lucy Maggie team as its second in-house illustrator and is already showing real passion and drive. The team is really excited to see where her unique talent takes the business as she works through her placement.

Based in the Baltic Creative area in Liverpool, Lucy Maggie Designs was able to offer Beth and Olivia additional, wraparound support through the gateway organisation for the area, Transform Lives Company. Support sessions were run once every two weeks and covered a range of topics, including: staying well at work, building resilience, maximising opportunities and improving CVs, and the importance of marketing yourself.

The Government Kickstart scheme began in September 2020 and is set to run until the end of 2021. The aim of the scheme is to provide funding to employees to create jobs for 16- to 24-year-olds on Universal Credit who are at risk of long-term unemployment.

Lucy Nicholson, owner of Lucy Maggie Designs, commented: “Liv has been a joy to work with during her 6-month kickstart placement. Her upbeat, positive, and humorous demeanour makes her a perfect team member. Liv’s design skills are superb, and she was easily able to adapt to the Lucy Maggie Designs brand to create some stellar work for the company. I would highly recommend Liv for any graphic design and illustration job!”

She continued: “Beth has really grown during her Kickstart placement. Always showing up early to work, her dedication and drive to succeed has not gone unnoticed. Beth excels in surface pattern design and has created some gorgeous pieces for the company which have been distributed on gift-wrap and notebooks – and have proven very popular! She also takes strong initiative when it comes to completing administrative tasks and does so to an exceedingly high standard, paying meticulous attention to detail.

“I am sad to have had to say goodbye to these two amazingly talented women, but it’s been amazing to have had them on the team over the last six months. I hope to invite them back in the future!”
